Good pass on Coulthard in the last lap, back in 1997.
In this race tire wear was abnormally high, Coulthard's tires were gone at the moment I guess. Excellent move by Johnny though!
This was the last year they raced the wider cars. From 1998 they introduced those strange looking small cars. Nowadays nobody notices anymore, I think today's cars look like goofy F3 cars.

I was just watching this years 2010's Hockenheim race build up on the BBC and they showed how the old layout was briefly and it's amazing all the foliage has taken over the track. They must have had to destroy the grave to let grass and greenery a chance to grow but I would have liked it if they kept it as is. They said it was converted to some conversation area so it's not all lost. Still though... :D

In 07/08 3 and 2 drivers within ONE point from the WC!!! Extremely exciting!!! But as I said it's not perfect: We could use some better looking cars (like the early 90's), some larger engines with better sound, and yes we need some "odd" circuits like this old Hockemheim! So im not saying its perfect, BUT neither were the 90's or the early 00's! It's as good as it gets right now, so please enjoy it instead of getting too lost in nostalgia! NOW are the "glory days" in 20 years!

Even though I am Spanish and were supposed to praise the Barcelona track, truth is quite, quite far away... A crap of a track with one of the worst overtaking curricula or carriers... If I ever go to a F1 race, I prefer other circuits like Spa, Monaco, Montreal or Abu Dhabi... And also, I prefer de la Rosa much better than Alonso (I´m so bored with Fernando... mainly because of certain race-commentator...)

@dave41184 No 2000 they had Supertech and 2001 they got the Asiatech engines which where based on the old Peugeot Engines from 2000(Minardi had those in 2002).Asiatech planned to develop that engine trough so they could start their own F1 team in 2004 orsomething but in 2003 no one wanted their engines anymore so the project got cancelled.

Mmmmm... De la Rosa qualified 9th here, although he was dropped to last because of a minor problem with the fuel, a mistake from the fuel supplier I think. He would only qualify better than 9th at Hockenheim that year, IIRC, so you can't really say that the Arrows sucked at Barcelona.

I don't doubt the ability of JV. He was a superb driver. The only problem was, he needed a good car. Williams gave that in 96(his debut, finished second) and 97 (his winning year). In 98, the Williams was crap though. When he moved to BAR, he thought he could do what Schumi did to Ferrari. Turn an absolutely lacklustre team into something great. But JV just doesn't have the ability to develop the car, so, his career went in reverse.

This car looks right a right handful. Never seen so much exit oversteer in any car before. Good job for keeping it on the road though. Takagi should have got another drive in a better car, but how many times have drivers come and gone who were expected to do big things and failed, through no fault of their own.

Their cars were regarded by many as well-designed for their tiny budget (in comparison to front-runners such as Ferrari, WIlliams and McLaren), their low position recognised as a result of a lack of funds (and engine power) rather than a poor car. During their whole time in F1, their engine suppliers included, Ford, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Hart, Fondmetal, Asiatech, European and Cosworth.

@strange6 They were in essence Ford Cosworth's but were badged as Zetec-R's and got no performance updates from Cosworth in 1996, with Ford eventually ignoring them all together with the entry of Stewart in 1998 as their new works team. 1997 was the only year they never had a works teams, all customer backfield teams and was the last year Ford & Cosworth done eany non-regulation work on the Zetec-R's.

@strange6 Sauber took over the works Ford deal from Benetton. Cosworth tuned all of Fords motors but only the works units received regular updates and carried the Cosworth badge. Zetec-R's were engines built by Ford, obvioulsy tuned by Cosworth then sold off as non-affiliated customer units. Ford done minor upgrades to them and upgrades required by regulation changes but Cosworth never gave them continual updates.

It was a poor engine back then but in two years it turned into the Ford-Cosworth CR-1 and set the bench mark for compactness and power. Cosworth have always developed and built Ford Formula one engines (except the Ford Weslake V12 back in the 60's which was short lived) so I don't understan what you mean by that last statement

@craigSimons00 Yeah, thats true. They used a Ford Zetec-R engine in 1998 & 1999. The Zetec-R was built in 1996 to supply Ford's customer teams with an "up-to-date" V10 engine after rule changes came into effect moving away from V8's & V12's that year and it was already underpowered then. Ford last updated it in 1997 and it wasn't even tuned by Cosworth, sold off as off the shelf customer units.

The thing about Minardi, is that they always built cars that worked. They never did this by having loads of complicated aero gadgets and electronics, but through simplicity. And this is the effect. A well balanced car, as you see in this video. No understeer, no oversteer. Makes you think if they ever had a more powerful engine they could be much more succesful.

I think Eddie is actually a very good driver. Remember his years with Ferrari. He really was one of the most improved drivers between 1997-1999. He had actually a very good championship campaing, but I guess Ferrari clearly didn´t want him much to become their first champion since 1979. They didn´t even develop the car between Silverstone and Malaysian GP (except some small aerodynamic updates). Eddie was also very consistent, he retired once this season (due to an engine failure at Imola).

After winning two titles with Lotus and McLaren he decided to start his own Brazilian Copersucar team, who he scored a single podium with in 5 seasons driving with them. alesi is one of my favourite drivers of all time. it didnt matter what car he drove he always drove the living shit out of it his aggression could only be compared to gilles villeneuve. even if he was qulifing 2 seconds down on the williams and mclarens at times it always seemed he was doing 1000mph. his battle with senna at phoenix 1990 was so ballsy. it makes me so sad when i read how unlucky this guy was he only got 1 win when he should have got at least 15 or more this guy was a champion
