Absolutey, they have every reason in the world to keep these on YouTube. Taking them down would create even more suspicion. The best way to keep something secret is through disinformation. Sure, the government could have taken this down right away, but I feel it's in their best interests not to. They certainly wouldn't have referred to some space debris as an "alien spacecraft." How much more proof do skeptics need? I suppose the astronauts were just looking at "temperature inversions," too.

@DAL3294 Essentially. But there's huge advantages. The orbiter's mass limits how useful it is. The thing can't go beyond low Earth orbit. Replacing the orbiter with a capsule + stage allows us to break free of low earth orbit. Also, cargo to ISS is greatly boosted. Instead of the majority of up-mass being the orbiter, now you can have it be more cargo for ISS. It's not a sexy rocket but it's a quick way to shortern the gap.

While the idea of the Shuttle-derived Sidemount HLV is undoubtedly cheaper than Constellation it seems relatively uninspired. It kind of feels like taking shortcuts instead of trying to make a new vehicle for the new century. It also seems like a waste of lifting power. While the Ares I is more expensive it doesn't really waste lifting power. All the technical issues with it are gone other than it maybe needing a little more power in the upper stage. Problems now are chiefly financial.

From what I read they plan on making a cost reduced SSME the RS25e which would be half the cost of the standard SSME and thus be ok to use in an expendable fashion. Even with the more expensive engine two of these HLVs would cost a lot less then an Ares I and V. The greater payload on the CLV makes it possible to reuse the Orion which cost more then the three RS25e engines.

I understand all the comments about the loss of the SSME's with this plan, but, my being the age I am, don't "remember" the Apollo missions didn't we have several engines that we "threw away" with every apollo launch? And with the many Apollo missions, and all the rocket engines that are at the bottom of the ocean, it's not unthinkable to splash a rocket engine. What i don't know is what is the cost difference between 3 SSME's and all of the engines in an Apollo launch?

@noonedude101 Also, if I'm not mistaken, since the tanks re-enter over the Pacific, despite being jettisoned over the Atlantic, it shows that they lack the orbital energy to make it back to the United States. Perhaps releasing the tank with more energy could overcome this but this would require reducing the payload mass.

They're going to come down along with the tank in roughly the same location though (unless we somehow work around this). @maksphoto78 Hydrazine is only the fuel the powers the APU's. The APU's power the hydraulic pumps which control the aero surfaces. The orbiter sits on the runway to power down systems, move doors, engines, surfaces etc. and verify no reaction control thrusters are leaking. APU exhaust goes straight up the rudder. The reaction control thrusters front and back also contain deadly fuels and oxyidizers.

@maksphoto78 not so shure bout all that, u see, the bottom of the orbiter is filled with a material that absorbs heat....you can put one cube of that material in an oven, and heat it to white hot and still be able to hold it bear hands whiout any discomfort, so the shuttle stands on the runway, cooling cos it still has around 80% of the absorbed heat still whitin itself, so they cool it of...hydrazine is very toxic, and i doubt they use it anymore...

Engineers on the ground wanted more proof via satelites or telescopes but Nasa Mgt. said they were done looking. Mgt. assumed it was cosmetic damage like so many missions before this one. However, the width of the tether and the length are still proportional no matter what way you look at it. This is pretty irrelevant though. One way or the other you have 1/4-3/4 mile wide objects doing U-turns. My measurements were based off of length of the tether, not the width. The length really doesn't seem to be that obscured by the exposure.

Nothing changes throughout those 21 seconds other than the fact that more objects appear. Now, I don't know how you can dispute the fact that these objects are miles away... Depending on where the sun is located, it would only make sense that the objects would move in a very similar manner and direction. This is not seen in the footage. Also, do you really think that the sublimation of water from solid to gas could exert enough force to make an object appearing at 50~ miles away go from 50~ to 100~ and then return to 50~ miles away?

Some of the strangest things are a glove lost by Ed White on the 1965 Gemini 4 flight, a tank of ammonia, Pee pumped overboard and frozen into tiny ice crystals, a pair of needle-nose pliers, a camera, and a complete tool bag. Here's some interesting facts..in November 1961 a secret meeting of leading government sponsored astronomers was held to estimate the number of planets in our own galaxy with intelligent life. these scientists concluded, that there are probably 40-50 million intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy alone and there are over 100 billion galaxies in our universe! yet some idiots still think the idea of ET's visiting earth is laughable!
