@MrMichaelSchwark I don't think it's about the time signatures necessarily. He's got a style that's just really fun to watch and get into. Plus he keeps time like a metronome, something young drummers anxious to show off their odd time signature navigating ability forget to work on.

Though being a die-hard Helmet fan since I was 13 years old I still don't get this Stanier hysteria out there. I don't mean this in a negative way, he's been my idol too, having a Helmet poster hanging on top of my kit in my fathers garage some 15 years ago. But in the end...if more drummers would dare to leave this four fourth pattern boundaries behind, we would have a few more Staniers out there and a bit less boring music :-). Honestly...I appreciate this man a lot, just my thoughts.

I really love the fact that a humble and shy guy plays such drums. Nowadays in the music business there is the mindset to do "happenings" and "big shows" Music becomes irrelevant to most parts of the record industry. No chance for Helmet these days. Battles would be the same. I love both bands very much but I assume they wouldn´t be able to put out records if they haven´t earned their credits in a different media environment. The same goes for Notwist or Radiohead starting from Kid A, etc.

I just think good bands are becoming harder to find. Not because there are less, but because the media has shifted. An even narrower range of bands get airplay/video-play or whatever than ever before... but the internet is good i guess... still... it lessens the chance of such good international alternative music fests happening. I can certainly relate to that.

You know, I might be getting old, but things just don't rock the way they used to....like, for example, Reading Festival 1993: Primus, Bad Brains, Stone Temple Pilots, Butthole Surfers, Soundgarden, Ozric Tentacles, Fishbone and a little known Tool opening the whole festival!!! Can't remember seeing something as good on paper since. The mid-nineties was a real zenith I agree (and I'm ready to push the continuum, grab the edges mate! :OD).

As great as the Bogdan/Stainier/Hamilton lineup was, I can't see why John would be at all interested given his current gig. Henry Bogdan apparently doesn't like that kind of music anymore (just a rumour, mind). The last Helmet album was pretty poor, in my humble opinion.

Very easy! It's probably more difficult to get hold of the stuff, and that's not so very difficult either! I did do very simple electrics, when I next do a layout I want to improve this side of things. At the time when I did this video I think both trains were running from an H&M Powermaster, this wasn't a great success in my view and I bought a new twin controller with lots of amps available, which was a great improvement; I'd seriously recommend not to use old control gear.

Well it's Dublo 3-rail, obsolete since about 1960! It was very robust, and there is a lot of it about on the second-hand market, prices are typically £1 per unit (more for points). If you want further details let me know and I'll tell you where you can get some,

Thanks! I'm glad you like them. I do like to see a more reasonable length train too, although I think a real 8F would have pulled up to about 100 wagons. The Castle has 7 carriages on, I expect a typical train would had been about 12 or 13. I was limited, partly by what the engines can actually pull, but also because I had a reversing loop across the middle of the oval, this imposed an absolute maximum of around 25 wagons otherwise a train on the loop would have run into itself!

There were two double track circuits; I didn't use them all as it didn't make a very satisfactory video; two trains one on the inner set and one on the outer set seemed to work better. The tracks in the foreground were carriage sidings for the station; as carriage stock would have obstructed the view I cleared them for the video, however I had nowhere else to put the mineral wagons!

In fact there were complaints when the Castle came out that it didn't go fast enough. Meccano replied by saying that it had been engineered to run at a scale 90mph which was in line with the original Castles.

Hi, Thanks for your comment. Hornby-Dublo was 4 mm to the foot running on 16.5mm track, this means that it was modelled to an incorrect gauge of 4'1.5"; this has remained the British 'OO' standard, and is still used today.

Thanks for your comment, I must have missed it when it came in. It was actually on the floor and only took a day to construct; there was a revision to the station area in the light of experience after a while. It ran pretty well while it was up. I am planning a reconstruction in more permanent form where it is at less risk from feet! All the best! Jim

For people who are interested in counting music: This song is easily counted in 4/4. When he starts the hi-hat tapping when the guitars come in, start counting in 3/4 (1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3) and just keep it going. After a couple of bars, he gets right back on beat (beat 1 coincides with count 1). This is just a good way of showing inexperienced viewers how 4/4 and 3/4 are the same, it's just how you look at it.

Man, Ian really blew that loop at the beginning. When I saw them in Paris a few years ago, it took him a good 3 minutes or so to get the loop right, but at least he made sure it was perfectly on beat. This time it's a little off and you can tell John isn't happy.
