@dukeassa Pretty darned good. The first few times you go surfing your shoulders will get a very heavy workout but don't let it deter you, your body will adapt with time. Wiping out and getting tossed around by waves can create some very hair-raising experiences so you'll want to be good at swimming and perhaps more importantly know how to hold your breath and orient yourself while under water.

I just bought a longboard a week ago and I watched videos like these just to get an understanding on how to do it and a few days of being out in the water, drowning and paddling like no tomorrow, I can already catch a wave, stand up, and have fun.

@jivechump That's not the Wedge. The Wedge is in Newport Beach and is only a few hundred yards across--and the waves there NEVER get that big. This is at Cortes Bank, a series of reefs and rock outcroppings about 100 miles off Southern California. It's known as the biggest waves in the world and its only accessible by boat or aircraft. The waves are moving so fast (30-40 mph) the surfers have to be towed by jetskis to be able to catch them.

@Ilovemytoast Dude the water up there is about 25F in the Summer,we're talking the arctic here,its too cold to live there in the wintertime let alone surf,but I do agree being from Ireland I can surf in a 3mm with boots and thermal vest and shorts underneath that in the height of Winter which is about 43F,I still wouldn't swop Ireland with anywhere in the world when the waves are good...

It's not that cold, in oregon it was 43F a couple of days ago but this is California people so there used to the warmer water, this water is like 38F or 35F I'm surprised they didn't use 6m suits. I used a 4/3m in 43 degree water and stayed out for about 2 or 3 hours, not bad. anyway nice surfing and props

HOWEVER, if you rent for (I don't know the prices as I've never rented in HI) $25/day, in 4 days you will have spent enough to buy a board. Furthermore, there's value in having the same board to be able to become more and more accustomed to. When you're beginning, if you hop around a lot you won't have time to really figure any of them out.

Once you're comfortable on that and making decent turns, move to a 6'3" or 6'4". Same process, then move to a 6'2" or 6'1", and finally a 5'11" or 6'0". Every board develops your ability. Get proficient at every board you can.

With that said, get a longboard to start (not super long but for instance, if you're 5'10" 170 I'd say get around an 8ft board. Learn at Waikiki, go EARLY. Paddle out before the sun comes up, this will give you the most waves before the rental shops open up. Once you are comfortable on it....

This was before the 1984 swell that shortened the Jetty and swept away the fencing. At the end of the Gillis Jetty it is like a pool surrounded by rocks and some surfer dove right into it off the top of a close out. He dove into the tip of the jetty and didn't get hurt
